Panagbenga 2014 Grand Float Parade – Better Floats | Baguio City
Today is the celebration of Panagbenga 2014 Grand Float Parade and I was lucky to be part of this festivity. The Parade started at around 8:30 am led by the City Officials of Baguio City. There are about 22 floats (19 are competing and 3 non-competing) and judging from this year’s floats it is much better than last year. This year every float was indeed laced with lots of different and colorful flowers, I heard because of the lack of supply of flowers some participants had to import flowers from Taiwan, i guess if this is true then it is high time that the Government should give attention to helping our local flower growers on how to increase their production especially those in Bahong La Trinidad which is considered as the Rose Capital of the Philippines.
Video Summary of the Panagbenga 2014 Grand Float Parade
Major companies such as SMART, NLEX, SM, Le Monet and Casino Alcohol were among those who have the best looking floats. The floats were made much more attractive to the viewers with the presence of some celebrities. Ogie Alcasid and some of the Ms. Philippines Earth winners were aboard the M Lhuillier Float. Cosplay Queen Alodia Gosiengfiao made the SMART Telco Float even more colorful, Ms. Earth winner added beauty to the Psalmstre Float, while Marian Rivera and Alden Richards made the GMA Float more exciting (some audience even got too close to the float just to take a photo of Marian and Alden).
Although not part of the competing floats, the SM float I believe was one of the grandest with its Chinese Year of the Horse theme. Just by looking at the structure of the float and the flowers used to decorate it, you could fathom that a lot of effort was put into their float considering that they are not competing.
Impressions on Panagbenga 2014 Grand Float Parade
As the title states all participants really outdid last years floats, this years version were better, yes there were fewer celebrities that last year but i think the reason for that is participants put more effort and finances in building the float. There are several hits and some misses regarding the Grand Float Parade in general. For one, marshalls, although present were partly ineffective in warding off spectators going beyond the designated line. The last float was a bit confusing that i did not take a photo of it, i did not see the correlation of an egyptian themed float with Cleopatra and a woman with snake for a body and a Sto. Nino image at the top of the pyramid.
What made the floats better this year was the incorporation of several mechanical features that made some parts of the float move, the Dinosaur Land float included animatronics, the last float also made the snake body of the woman to move from side to side and the Plants vs. Pollution float of NLEX produced bubbles.
In conclusion, despite the misses I believe that this years’ float parade is indeed exciting, fun and colorful which makes us wonder and excited at the same time for Panagbenga 2015, we should remember that Panagbenga 2015 is going to be the 20th staging of this Festival in Baguio City, am I sensing something even more special for next year? We will soon find out! For now however enjoy the festivities and if you haven’t visited Baguio yet there are several other activities in line up to the closing of festival on March 2, 2014. Now time to eat shawarma at Session Road…
